With higher wattage, although the light produced is brighter, it produces more heat as well. No electrical appliances go well with heat. The more heat it produces, the shorter the lifespan of your bulb. Unless you really do need the light, reduce the wattage.
By knowing what purpose you want your lamp to serve, you can then picture the type and style of lamp that will fit that purpose or at least be able to recognize one when you see it.
Consider How The Lamp Will Be Used. Another consideration will be how the lamp will be used. If you are choosing a floor lamp to add light to a corner where you will be doing a lot of reading, an arched lamp would be a better investment for this purpose than a clamp lamp might be.
